The Iron Alliance

The Iron Alliance was the defining heel tag team of the Great Western Wrestling Alliance's Expansion Era: a Cold War powerhouse that paired Soviet ideology with American money, and dominated the tag division for the better part of a decade.

The Team

The Alliance united two men who agreed on nothing except dominance through sheer power. "Ironside" Ivan Gregorovich was the Soviet strongman, an unmovable slab of state-built muscle. "Steel Hammer" Hank Roberts was his opposite number and his equal in cruelty: a Malibu playboy born to money, a 6'4", 265-pound industrial bruiser whose motto was "Crushing Class and Smashing Brass." Ideology on one side, inherited wealth on the other, and a shared contempt for everyone across the ring.

Guiding them from the corner was the manager and strategist Ivan Petrovic, "The Iron Fist", who gave the pairing its discipline and its menace. Petrovic ran the Alliance the way he ran everything, with a stopwatch, clipped Russian and hidden brass knuckles, and treated each title defense as another drill.

Inaugural Champions

The Iron Alliance were the first team to hold the GWA Tag Team Championship, winning the belts at the Great Western Grand Tag Team Round-Up in 1972. They would hold the titles multiple times across the decade, and for tag-team supremacy through the Expansion Era they were rivalled only by the World Renowned Squabble Squad. The two teams' feud was the spine of the era's tag division.

Breaking the Renegade Riders

Their most notorious work was not a match but a dismantling. The Renegade Riders pushed the Alliance hard for the tag titles, and rather than out-wrestle them, Petrovic went to work on the seam between the partners. His machinations were the hidden hand behind the Riders' collapse in late 1972, the first clear demonstration of what became the Iron Fist's signature: getting a team to destroy itself from the inside.

The Alliance were a fixture on the era's biggest cards, appearing at Showdown Spectacle '76 in a six-man tag against The Frontier Brothers.

Into the Industrial Revolution

As the 1970s went on, the Alliance grew beyond a two-man team and rebranded as the Industrial Revolution, folding in "Railroad" Rick Rhodes and "The Technician" Thomas Reed, and later Petrovic's own teenage son Nikolai. What began as a tag team became a stable, and Petrovic spent as much time managing its internal tensions as aiming it at opponents.
